CBT or Compulsory Basic Training is a mandatory training course for all those who want to ride and operate a moped or motorcycle independently. This became a requirement for all UK riders in 1990 in an effort to limit road accidents that are the result of uninformed and inexperienced drivers. With Compulsory Basic Training, drivers can earn their licences after having passed the theory test and the practical tests. The CBT will remain valid for a period of two years after completion.
What You Can Expect
The CBT includes 5 phases that will be completed one at a time in sequential order. This means that the first phase must be completed before you can move on to the next one and so forth. It is only possible to move from one training phase to another if your instructor believes that you’ve acquired all of the necessary skills at each level. These five phases are:
– On-Site Practical Training
– On-Site Practical Riding
– On-Road Practical Training
– On-Road Practical Riding
Once all of these phases have been completed in a satisfactory manner, you’ll be given a DL196 which is a certificate of completion. When you have this document, each of the entitlements that your driving licence will include are considered valid.
However, there are several considerations involving the DL196. After this document has been granted, all of the included entitlements will be valid for up to two years and you will be required to complete and past tests on both practical application and theory throughout this time period. If you should happen to fail both the theory and practical tests during the allotted two-year period, it will be necessary to take the CBT once more.
It is additionally important to note that once you’ve passed the driving test while maintaining an active DL196 or after you have passed the car test and completed the CBT and earned your DL106, the certificate will not expire. This means that you are required to retain the DL196. Keep in mind, however, that this fact is only applicable to moped operators. If you wish to be qualified to operate a motorcycle, your DL196 will continue to be active for up to two years.
